Nicknamed “Sanpachi” (Japanese for “Three-Eight), the GT380 was released by Suzuki in 1972 alongside its big sibling—the GT550. At the heart of the bike was a 380cc two-stroke triple putting down 37.4 horsepower and 27.5ft-lbs of torque—at 7,500rpm and 6,500rpm respectively.
Tipping the scales at just over 400lbs wet, the GT380 was smooth, comfortable, and large enough to easily accommodate a passenger. Later is the model’s first year of production, its front drum brake was upgraded to a single disc setup.
Like its larger 550 stablemate, the GT380 had a one-piece cylinder head cooled using the ram-air cooling system that the Hamamatsu marque had originally developed for its road race bikes. It also featured a unique 3-into-4 quad-muffler setup.
In the October 1976 issue of Cycle World, the magazine did an extensive road test of the GT380—which can be read HERE.
