First released in 1972 to compete with Kawasaki’s H1 Mach III, the Suzuki GT550 was part of the Hamamatsu marque’s then-new Grand Touring series. Also known as the “Indy,” the bike featured a two-stroke triple with a 543cc displacement—slotting it right between the 750 and 380 variants.
In the January 1973 issue of Cycle World, the magazine did a full breakdown and review of the lightly-updated GT550 for the ’73 model year.
The undersquare engine was equipped with a one-piece cylinder head cooled via a ram-air system. In its second year in production, the model jettisoned its front drum brake in favor of a hydraulically operated single disc setup.
