In 1966, Buddy Elmore won the Daytona 200 on a Triumph T100T Tiger 500. It was Triumph’s first win at the legendary race, and they honored the achievement by creating the T100R Daytona 500. Then they proved they had earned the name when Gary Nixon won the race in 1967 on the new model, as well. White the T100T was tuned for low-end torque, the T100R Daytona needed a rider who was willing to twist the throttle. In a period Cycle World review, they called it a “Jekyll and Hyde…below 4,500rpm, the Daytona would work like “a strong 350”; but shifting instead at 6,000rpm, we found a whole new level of performance, and a top speed of 105mph“.
By 1973, Triumph had beefed up the motor a bit with race cams, upgraded connecting rods, and stronger cam followers/valve guides. Triumph claimed 40 horsepower and a curb weight of 386 pounds.
