One of the most interesting eras of the Indian Motorcycle Company history is the ownership chapter of Floyd Clymer and Alan Newman from 1963 to 1977. Many equate Indian with big-inch V-twins, however, Clymer saved the name from the ash heap of history by importing Italjet mini bikes from Italy and slapping the Indian name on the tank. His attorney Newman took over the brand in 1970 after Clymer died and by the mid 1970s engine capacity ranged from 50cc to 175cc with plans to offer 250cc, 350cc and 500cc in the near future.
One of the better known models was the 2-stroke Indian MX74. With a 70cc engine and 4-speed transmission, the little dirt bike weighed 146 pounds, had a 1.6 gallon tank, a 47 inch wheel base, and could push 60mph. Advertising at the time touted an aluminum engine, full double loop frame, full floating rear brake, and a tuned exhaust.
This example is VIN: 0173E707674. The Petersen Automotive Museum acquired the bike seven years ago to feature in its Harley-Davidson vs. Indian exhibit.
