Built between ’73 and ’78, the TX500 was Yamaha’s first medium-displacement four stroke motorcycle and the little brother to the TX750. The 500 was well-equipped with an electric starter, front disc brake, and a 5-speed transmission – all improvements over what was offered by competition like Triumph’s Daytona 500. Unfortunately, little issues meant that journalists never fell in love with it, and the average consumer didn’t either. Still, 40+ years later, this bike is a cheap way to get into classic motorcycling!

Basic specs included 48 horsepower, a top speed of 98 miles per hour, and wet weight of 456 pounds. For more on the TX500 and why it’s now an “under the radar” classic, check out this article on Motorcycle Classics.

This example is VIN: 371100880, engine #: 371100880. The seller acquired the bike approximately three years ago. He notes that, “it was brought to the dealership and sold by the individual who restored and built it as the cafe racer as it sits.”

The seller states that true mileage is unknown. Per the seller, the current 1,638-mile odometer reading reflects mileage after the completed rebuild.

Maintenance:
The seller reports that he has replaced the battery, changed the oil, and rebuilt the carbs. He adds that “the starter clutch is sometimes Finicky, but the bike always starts.”

Modifications:
“Rear brakes have been cut open to show internally how they work.”

Painted frame, aftermarket seat/seat pan, aftermarket muffler.

Clip-on handlebars, aftermarket switchgear.

Pipe wrap.

Aftermarket headlight, speedomter.

Inside of the tank:

It is riding on Shinko SR712 tires that have aged out.
