After Spanish manufacturer Montesa decided to withdraw from competition, Francesc “Paco” Bultó left the company (along with most of the racing department employees) and decided to start his own motorcycle company in 1958, with the brand an amalgamation of his own surname Bultó and his nickname Paco. Despite Bultaco’s primitive facilities — early models were built on one of Bultó’s family farms — the upstart manufacturer had a bike ready for the press by 1959. And here’s the thing: just two months later, they entered their first Spanish Grand Prix, sweeping seven of the first ten finishing positions in the 125cc class in the process.

With time, Bultaco became best known for its off-road competition bikes, such as the Sherpa T, the Matador, and the Pursang. Originally offered in displacements ranging from 125cc to 350cc, the highest-spec Pursang grew to 370cc (like the engine in the bike being offered today) before the first closure of the factory in 1979. The ’77 Mk10 was a standout example of the breed, with 284 claimed improvements from the previous year including gusseting around the steering head, lowering the engine in the frame, Bultaco’s own front suspension, and upgraded shocks. In their review, Cycle World said “the newest from Barcelona is one of the most amazing motocrossers we’ve ever tested. Pretty to look at. . . yes. And pretty turns to beautiful once the engine is fired and the bike begins circulating around a motocross track.”

This example is VIN: HB19300670, Engine #: HM-19300670.

There is no odometer, true mileage is unknown.

“This bike came to me from the second owner, a longtime friend of mine who asked me to sell it. I’ve known the owner for decades and also this bike since he got it, which we believe was around 12 years ago, maybe earlier. He also owns the Maico in this auction. He reports the top end was done by Hugh’s Bultaco, he rode the bike briefly in the field across from his home, drained the fuel and put it away inside his home, It ran and drive fine but I have not tried to start it because of my recent surgery.”
Maintenance:
“We have not located receipts but we are looking for them. Tires were new leftover dealer-take offs installed after he got the bike.”
Modifications:
“It’s painted to match Jim Pomeroy’s factory works bike. It is not original paint.”

It is riding on Dunlop tires that have aged out.
