The GS550 was one of Suzuki’s earliest four-stroke bikes, and it proved itself a competent standard — even alongside its larger 750cc sibling. The 550 put out 49 horsepower and weighed 431 pounds wet, meaning it was good for a top speed of 111 miles per hour.

Around the bike, Suzuki fitted standard telescopic forks up front and traditional pre-load adjustable shocks at rear, tuned for a firm ride compared to the softly-sprung options throughout the class. Between the smooth power plant and the reliable chassis, Suzuki’s GS550 represented an excellent all-rounder. As Cycle World put in its review, it’s “a machine with any number of solid virtues, but they’re subtle virtues, the kind that take some familiarity to appreciate.”

Introduced in 1977, Suzuki’s GS550 was one of their earliest 4-stroke bikes. The 549cc engine put out 49 horsepower and the whole package weighed 431 pounds wet, good for a top speed of 111 miles per hour and a quarter-mile time under 14 seconds.

It was smooth, fast, and a great all-around machine. Cycle World called it “a machine with any number of solid virtues, but they’re subtle virtues, the kind that take some familiarity to appreciate.”
