After HD gave the FL series electric starters in 1965, they renamed the model the Harley-Davidson Electra Glide. The bike got a few changes over the next decade – including a second disc brake, removal of the kick starter, and the optional Batwing fairing.

It featured the Shovelhead engine, which displaced 1,208cc and produced 10 percent more horsepower than the Panhead predecessor. The 74 ci engine pushed 60 horsepower and 70 ft-lb of torque through a 4-speed transmission.

Although no longer in Harley’s line-up, the Electra Glide name is one of the most cherished in Harley’s history. “It’s like word association,” reads a Harley-Davidson magazine ad from 1977. “Somebody says ‘touring’ and the answer comes back ‘Electra Glide.”

This example is VIN: FLA31548.
