Produced in Barcelona, the Montesa Cota 247 was one of the most successful trials motorcycles of the 1970s. It was powered by a 247cc two stroke single that produced approximately 19 horsepower and was paired with a five speed transmission. Built on a tubular steel frame with Montesa’s own telescopic fork and twin shocks, the Cota offered a combination of light weight and precise control that made it competitive in both professional and amateur events.

This 1978 model represents the final year of 247 production before Montesa introduced the smaller 237cc version. It features a fiberglass fuel tank, alloy fenders, and minimal lighting equipment, allowing limited road use while maintaining a 200 pound dry weight.

In the words of the original owner’s manual: “The Montesa motorcycle which model is introduced here do [sic] not require an excessive care for maintenance, only a minimum attention is required to ensure a long and perfect serviceable time.” That simplicity remains a key part of the Cota’s appeal today, a wonderfully straightforward two-stroke that reflects Montesa’s practical approach to design and durability.

This example is VIN: 21M26408, with matching engine number. The seller has owned it for about a year and has used it as a display piece. “I purchased this bike with damaged plastics from AZ sun. It has been meticulously cleaned and new plastics fitted. It has an indicated 12 miles supported by the original Akront stickers on the rims and shocks as well as zero dints or dings on the skid plate. I would consider it a museum worthy bike. All original Herza marked bolts.”

Maintenance:
The seller states: “It has new fenders, new tail light, new license plate rubber and chain guard. It is largely a museum piece and has not had any regular maintenance performed under current ownership as it has not been ridden. It still has good compression but has not been run under current ownership. Tank is clean inside. Rolls easily, brakes work. Carb has been rebuilt and coil is new.”
Modifications:
The seller states that the bike is in OEM condition and has no modifications.
It is riding on the original Pirelli tires which have aged out and show cracking.

The seller states “there are no keys or ignition system on this bike.”
Original toolkit with original Montesa shop rag.

Cosmetic Blemishes:
The seller states: “The rims are original and have a couple corrosion spots on them. Nothing has been demounted to try to polish out the marks in order to preserve originality. The engine cases have some light nicks and have not been over polished to remove them. Original rear shock bushings have age rot but didn’t want to disturb the original Betor markings. Tank badges have original patina.” Please see the album in the “Photos” tab for all known cosmetic blemishes. Here is a selection:
