In the late 70s, the big four Japanese companies kicked off a horsepower war that by stuffing increasingly larger engines into their usual frames. When it came to Big Red’s turn, Honda decided to push boundaries and utilize their first six-cylinder engine in a production motorcycle.
But here’s the thing: Benelli actually beat Honda to the punch in terms of 6-cylinder bikes with the Sei. Even still, the Honda CBX1000 quickly became the standard as a naked superbike with an intoxicating soundtrack. It was easily the most technologically advanced bike of its day – and with a 1/4 mile trap speed of 117.95 @ 11.36 seconds, it was the fastest, too.
In an article in the April 1978 issue of Cycle World, the magazine stated “The CBX is the Vincent Black Shadow of 1979.” The Honda CBX1000 only lasted for five years, but just like the Vincent, it led to a new wave of sports-oriented motorcycles. A 6.1 gallon tank was necessary as the 6 individual carbs and monster power led to mpg figures in the 20s.
This example is VIN: CB12021161. The seller acquired it in 2009 from a private collector.

During their ownership, the seller has covered about 4,000 miles. The odometer shows 6,125 miles.

Maintenance:
Per the seller: “With so few miles, it didn’t need a lot. In addition to oil and filter changes, the carbs were sent out to OldSchoolCarbs in San Jose, California for a total rebuild, where they were installed and synced to perfection. It also has new-old stock alternator brushes, new NGK plugs, and new clutch rubbers to help with the well known CBX clutch rattle, plus new Dunlop tires and a new Yuasa battery. Lastly it was treated to new front and rear brake rebuilds using new-old stock Honda parts.”
Mechanical Issues:
Per the seller: “Like every ’79 CBX, it still has a little clutch rattle. The new rubbers helped a lot but when it gets hot you can still hear it. Other than that, it will fire up on the first try and idle down to almost 500rpm without stalling.”
Modifications:
The bike features a more modern and more reliable spark unit (CDI).
It is riding on Dunlop D404 tires that have aged out with dates codes of 1916 and 2316.

The sale includes 2 ignition keys.

Also included is the original OEM spark unit/CDI.
