In the late 70s, the big four Japanese companies kicked off a horsepower war by stuffing increasingly larger engines into their usual frames. When it came to Big Red’s turn, Honda decided to push boundaries and utilize their first 6-cylinder engine in a production motorcycle.
In a 1978 review, Cycle Guide said, “the CBX is the Vincent Black Shadow of 1979.” The Honda CBX1000 only lasted for five years, but just like the Vincent, it led to a new wave of sports-oriented motorcycles. A 6.1 gallon tank was necessary as the 6 individual carbs and monster power led to mpg figures in the 20s.
This example is VIN: CB12022686, Engine #: CB1E-2022832.
The odometer shows 186 kilometers (115 miles) – we assume that represents the distance covered after a prior restoration.
This bike was part of the South Africa collection – the seller bought it in before it went up for auction and then had us service it with an oil/filter change, brake fluid flush, carb rebuild and sync, new petcock, tank clean and line, new battery, rear brake master cylinder and caliper rebuild and repaint, fork rebuild, gas cap repaint, and replace air filter.
We also installed new Dunlop D404 tires with date codes of 1421 and 2121.
He ended up finding another bike that he’s been looking for while the service work was being completed and he doesn’t have room for both, so the CBX needs a new home.
Modifications:
Battery tender lead.
Aftermarket mirrors.
Cosmetic Blemishes:
The tail has been repainted and it does not match the tank color.
Inside of the tank:
Currently located at our facility in Santa Monica, California (please make an appointment for an inspection), this Honda is offered on a clean Oregon title. It’s still equipped with a South African license plate – the new owner can keep this if they wish.
