In the late 70s, the big four Japanese companies kicked off a horsepower war that by stuffing increasingly larger engines into their usual frames. When it came to Big Red’s turn, Honda decided to push boundaries and utilize their first 6-cylinder engine in a production motorcycle.
But here’s the thing: Benelli actually beat Honda to the punch in terms of 6-cylinder bikes with the Sei. Even still, the Honda CBX1000 quickly became the standard as a naked superbike with an intoxicating soundtrack. It was easily the most technologically advanced bike of its day – and with a 1/4 mile trap speed of 117.95 @ 11.36 seconds, it was the fastest, too.
In a 1978 review, Cycle Guide said “The CBX is the Vincent Black Shadow of 1979.” The Honda CBX1000 only lasted for five years, but just like the Vincent, it led to a new wave of sports-oriented motorcycles. A 6.1 gallon tank was necessary as the 6 individual carbs and monster power led to mpg figures in the 20s.
This example is VIN: CB12017204. The seller purchased the bike February 2021 from the original owner.
During his ownership the seller has covered approximately 15 miles. The odometer shows 12,013 miles.
Maintenance:
The seller states, “Service in 2024 included overhauling the six Keihin carburetors, rebuild of front calipers, rebuild of master-cylinder, changing the brake fluid and oil. A new battery was also installed. Maximum effort was put in to keep it original and preserving its patina.”
Modifications:
According to the seller the bike is stock. “This bike represent the unique opportunity as it is a completely original bike, with its original exhaust, original seat, chain, etc. I spent years looking for such an original bike and was finally able to locate one that has been preserved in its factory condition. I’ve kept it 100% original.”
Inside of the tank:
It is riding on its original Pirelli Phantom Supersport tires which have aged out.
The sale includes three keys, tool kit, owner’s and service manuals, original sales document, service receipts. Per the seller, “The original owner was a real life James Bond! He put both the owner’s manual as well the toolkit away the day of purchase in plastic and sealed and they’ve never been used. The first time they’ve been taken out was first these photos!”
