With the days of the two-stroke slowly fading in the rearview mirror, Yamaha decided that it would bring back the engaging and exciting feel of a two-stroke, but wanted to wrap it up in a street-faring 4 stroke package. By 1978, Yamaha had taken the success from their off-road market and made the SR500, a 4-stroke single cylinder middle-weight motorcycle that put up respectable numbers for the time. At peak power, the SR500 was good for 31 hp and 26 lb-ft of torque. The SR was an uncompromised motorcycle that rewarded the basics, and was unrelenting in it’s form.
