Introduced in 1986, the Yamaha YSR80 is a much rarer big brother to the YSR50, a popular miniature motorcycle that even surprises knowledgeable motorcyclists when they discover the bikes can be plated and legally run on the street in certain states.
The 79cc two-stroke motor was good for approximately 8-9 horsepower, and it was paired with a 5-speed transmission, front disc/rear drum brake, and styling that truly made it feel like part of Yamaha’s sportbike family. The 1986 model was offered in two color schemes: red/white and blue/yellow. The YSR80 saw more time in the spotlight predominantly due to its larger powerplant and its more performance-oriented components — such as the front disc brake.
In Japan, the little bike appealed to those looking for a frugal and funky way to commute to and from work in the thick of the city proper. Across the seas, it mostly appealed to junior racers looking to hone their skills and build their familiarity with bikes. The YSR80 was one of many motorcycles to come out of the 80’s that was known for being different and fun, but make no mistake — this tiny terror would stand out in any crowd.
