After the classic 750GT of the 70s, Ducati looked to evolve with a simpler engine. They ended up with the first ‘square case’ bevel twin: the 860 GT.
Just a few years later, they released the much improved 900 SD Darmah.
By 1981, the SD Darmah featured Brembo brakes, magnesium Speedline wheels, a dual seat with more padding, Bosch ignition, Silentium exhaust, standard electric start, and Marzocchi suspension.
This example is VIN: 902853. The seller acquired the bike from a private party six months ago.
The odometer shows 30,433 miles.
Maintenance:
Per the seller, “in 2019, the bike underwent some major recommissioning work for the previous owner at ‘Made in Italy Motorcycles Limited’ based in Suffolk. The work amounted to a total cost of £2,910.91 in parts and labour (receipt is included in the sale). The mileage at the time of the work being completed was 29,791 but here is a breakdown of the work carried out:
– A full service was carried out including valve clearances.
– The carburettors were removed then stripped the accelerator pumps well it cleaned out, calibrated and rebuilt.
– There was a cracked fuel inlet banjo union and fuel lines. They were perished inlet manifold rubbers which were replaced, and the inlet manifolds were cleaned out.
– The main earth cable was cleaned unchecked for charging. The kick start lever has been heated and straightened.
– The clutch assembly well stripped and inspected and the clutch plates were corroded and stuck together.
– The clutch plate was replaced, and the basket and hub were cleaned whilst removed. Front and rear brake callipers have been replaced a full bleed system and test.
– Fuel taps were removed old fuel flushed out and the taps were replaced.
– The batteries drop and side panel grommets were replaced whilst the wheels were removed the brake discs were cleaned to remove corrosion between the discs and the wheels tyres were replaced balanced and refitted.
– The front forks was stripped washed out and inspected. Damaged and corroded sanctions will replaced and fitted with new oil seals and filled with fresh oil.
– The bottom yoke was dropped, washed out steering head bearings and repacked with grease.
– Remove the throttle cable assembly and replaced the cables.
Then, in 2022, a further £1473.14 was invested in the bike. The previous owner experienced difficulty with the bike starting. This was traced to poor contact at the ignition switch, which was removed from the housing the contacts were cleaned and refitted. At the same time, an extended clutch arm was fitted and the clutch cable was re-routed — the bikes notoriously have a very stiff clutch, this makes gear changing more pleasurable. The bike was still riding on the original OEM Speedline wheels which are well known for cracking (even in early years) so with a bike over 40 years old it was important that these were changed as a safety aspect. The wheels were removed and replaced with safer FPS wheels. At the same time, new brake discs were fitted and the tyres and tubes from the speed line wheels were fitted to the FPS as they were in good condition. Of course, these were then balanced and refitted. Both fork legs were removed and the leaking seals were replaced and then refitted. The bike also had its carburetors cleaned, set up and balanced before a road test. At the time of this service in 2022, the bike had covered 30,267 miles. So just a further 476 miles since the previous work was done in 2019.
In the last six months (during our ownership) it has had a full respray on the body work where the gold striped detailing has been painted by hand and lacquered. At a cost of £1000, this work has to be seen in the flesh to be appreciated. The current mileage reads 30,433, so the bike has covered a mere 162 miles since the clutch rebuild and the new wheels were fitted.”
The sale includes a workshop manual, instruction manual, and maintenance manual.
It is riding on Bridgestone Battlax BT45 tires with date codes of 0919 and 1519.
