Synonymous with success and bearing a pedigree of championships, the Elsinore name had been previously reserved for motorcycles that were as close to a race-replica as Honda was legally allowed to sell. Bringing back that same idea, Honda introduced the CR250R Elsinore originally in 1978, offering average riders the chance to own a motorcycle that was contending for podiums every weekend.
The ‘R’ in the CR250R let every rider know the performance to expect from their machine, and perform they did. The 250 was amongst the lightest in its class – 224 pounds, to be exact – which was largely due to the compact and lightweight engine, which weighed just over 56 pounds. The engine was cradled by a chromoly-tubed frame that had a single downtube and backbone, keeping the design simple yet functional and easy to work around.
The Elsinore did things right, and that was mostly thanks to the simplicity of its design; the engine had been previously tested in two complete racing seasons, the suspension was strikingly simple yet effective, and the frame was a tried-and-true design that Honda had seen years of success with. These factors led the two-stroke motorcross bike to much success, and it was this same motorcycle that Cycle World dubbed “the best handling motocrosser we’ve ever ridden.”
