Description

Click here for an VINData Motorcycle History Report on this 1980 Moto Guzzi Le Mans CX100. Additional photos are available here for your perusal.

Moto Guzzi first unveiled the Le Mans 850 back in 1975 at the Milan motorcycle show, bringing the bike to market the following year. The model was updated consistently throughout its lifetime — spawning several variations in displacement, color, and trim — until it finally ceased production in the 1990s.

As with other middleweight Moto Guzzis, the engine was based on the block found in the V7 Sport of 1971. Thanks to upgrades like higher-compression pistons, larger valves, and a set of 36mm Dell’Orto carburetors paired with velocity stacks, output was bumped from 53hp up to 73hp.

In the states, however, not even that was enough. To satisfy the American mantra of “no replacement for displacement” and to compete with the BMW R100RS, Guzzi took the 1000cc engine and lower fairings from the 1000SP sport tourer and added them to the LeMans. What resulted was a variant known as the CX100, and it first arrived in 1979. According to Ian Falloon in his “Moto Guzzi Sport & Le Mans Bible”, just 353 of these bikes were built.

As Cycle Magazine found in its 1979 review, “If there’s a road you hold dear to heart out past the lake and Cottonwood trees, if you appreciate craftsmanship, aesthetics, and function, you should be drawn as if by a magnet to the Moto Guzzi Le Mans. It is one of a special few.”

Manufactured in June of 1979, this example is VIN: VU111185, engine #: VG203736. The seller acquired the bike from Moto Guzzi Classics eight years ago.

The odometer shows 383 miles. However, true mileage is unknown.
