Up until the 1970s, most of Suzuki’s lineup consisted of buzzy, oil-burning two-strokes. However, stringent emissions regulations combined with industry progress meant that these bikes were soon made obsolete.
Seeing the writing on the wall, Suzuki introduced a lineup of four-strokes spanning from 400cc to 750cc. In Japan, the GS400 proved especially popular because of its “medium” size — a classification that made it economical to own; any larger and it would bump you up into a more expensive tax bracket.
Admittedly, the 400 was a little underpowered for the U.S. market. For this reason, Suzuki gave the twin a slight displacement bump, thus taking it up to 450cc in 1980 with the GS450. Despite sporting some similarities to its predecessor, the bike’s engine was entirely new from the crank up. For instance, the bore was stretched from 67mm to 71mm and the stroke was shortened from 60mm down to 56.6mm. In practice, this meant that it put down 38hp at the rear wheel and could take you to a top speed of 100mph.
Over the course of its production life, the GS450 came in a variety of different trims, including the base “E” model, the sport-styled “S” model, the traditional “T” model, as well as the commuter-friendly “TX” and the cruiser-style “L” models.
