Here in the United States, you may know Kawasaki for its wide-ranging lineup of “KZ” bikes. Elsewhere around the world, however, they were known as the “Z” series — just take the 1300 you see here for example.

In a period review of its stateside counterpart, Cycle World called the bike “an incredible hulk,” saying “There are motorcycles with more speed, but not with the same combination of power, strength, comfort and handling… the sophistication is incredible, the size is enormous.” Displacement-wise, it was the biggest of the classic six-cylinder motors like the Benelli Sei and the Honda CBX. As with its competition, the big K wasn’t a commercial success. However, collectors now appreciate the audacity of a bike that screamed excess from the weight to the price.

Built for 10 years, the 1,286cc engine produced a hefty 120 horsepower. Top speed was similarly significant with magazine tests showing that it was capable of hitting 140 mph. But the 710-pound wet weight meant it was thirsty, with a mpg rating of approximately 30. For more information, check out this ‘six-cylinder’ comparison from Motorcycle Classics.

This example is VIN: KZT30A013070. The seller acquired the bike from a private collector two years ago.

The odometer shows 37,697 kilometers (23,423 miles).

Maintenance:
The seller reports that he has performed a major service in which the bike had a brake service and a carb cleaning and syncing along with new valve stems, new piston rings, and a new waterpump shaft and impeller.

He notes that the tachometer is currently exhibiting a “winding noise.” He has removed the cable for the time being and will be including it with the sale.

Modifications:
Cowley stainless steel exhaust.

Inside of the tank:

It is riding on Bridgestone Spitfire and Bridgestone Exedra tires from 2004.

Cosmetic Blemishes: please see the album up top for all known cosmetic blemishes. Here is a selection:
