Schwinn introduced the Spitfire in 1951, and it was a popular model in their lineup for nearly three decades. There were several changes over the years, and by the end they had evolved into “cruisers” with either 24″ or 26″ wheels, balloon tires, and the option of a coaster brake ($136.95) or a hand brake with 5-speed derailleur ($169.95).

A common modification to these bicycles and a stepping stone to the world of motorcycling was to source a friction-drive engine to mount to one of the wheels. One popular manufacturer was Tanaka, who offered bicycle motors under several names: Sears Free Spirit, Little Devil, Tas Spitz, Aqua Bug, and the Bike Bug we’re featuring today. There were multiple offerings but the most common was a 23cc two-stroke engine that produced a claimed 0.8 horsepower. There was a gentleman named Mike Schneider in Houston, Texas who kept the Bike Bug community going with parts and reproduction items but it looks like he is no longer in business.

This example does not have a VIN, but a frame stamp is present which reads EN42084. The seller bought this bike fifteen years ago from the Dennis Carpenter Museum in Charlotte, North Carolina. During his ownership, the seller has covered five miles. The odometer shows 266 miles.

Maintenance:
“After being properly stored for 20+ years, the carb was cleaned, new air filter installed, gas tank cleaned (2 stroke!), and the motor fired on the third attempt, as seen on the video. The engagement gear is rather worn, so you’ll see a rope being used to start the engine. The engagement gear is being replaced, and will be installed prior to shipment..”

Modifications:
“The Bike Bug motor mounted on the front wheel was a great period modification.”
