Built between 1970 and 1983 for the U.S., the XS650 had a production run of approximately half a million. When released, it was Yamaha’s biggest production bike and it was advanced for the time with unit construction for the engine and transmission, as well as a horizontally-split crankcase. It aped the styling of classic British twins but these Yammies developed a solid reputation for reliability.

The model got several upgrades over its 13 year production run – 1972 was a notable year as that’s when the XS gained an electric start and disc brakes. 1980 saw the addition of an electric ignition. In a ’79 test, Cycle World saw 51.4 mpg and a quarter mile in 13.86 seconds at 96.05 miles per hour. For more information, check out this model history from ST Customs here.

This example is VIN: 4M4005218. The seller purchased the bike 10 years ago and states, “Build it as a resto-mod scrambler, just because I love scramblers and everything slightly offroady. It used to be a bit of chopper model XS650. With a weird seat on it and high handlebars. And the XS650 engine is just a very nice raw noise engine that really rumbles through the street. Old english style engine, with Japanese durability.”

Maintenance:
Per the seller, “We have completely rebuilt the bike and the engine, new pistons, valves and everything inside the engine has been changed for new or overhauled.”
Modifications:
The seller states, “Flatslide carbs, Sparks full exhaust system with bigger pipes and special tuning for more torque at lower revs. Modern YZF600 Thundercat front fork, specially rebuild and shortened by Hyperpro.com suspension. Full new wheels with standard hubs and special disc brake conversion for the front wheel so the original Yamaha YZF600 Thundercat brakes could fit, special radial brake pump for extra stopping power. Motogadget electronics and grips and speedo.”

It is riding on Heidenau K60 tires with date codes of 1117 and 2717. The seller is happy to install new tires on the bike if the winning bidder would like.

The sale includes two sets of keys.

Cosmetic Blemishes:
According to the seller, there are no blemishes.
