Built to celebrate Mike Hailwood’s legendary 1978 Isle of Man TT comeback victory, the Ducati 900 MHR (Mike Hailwood Replica) was originally intended as a limited production homologation special. Ducati planned to build just 200 units in 1979, but demand was so strong that production continued until 1986, with roughly 7,100 examples produced, making it the best selling bevel drive twin Ducati ever made.
When it debuted, the MHR was essentially a 900SS styled to echo Hailwood’s Sports Motor Cycles liveried TT winner, finished in striking red and green bodywork. Ducati described it as a bike for “hardcore Ducatisti”, even omitting an electric starter on the early models. Power came from an 863cc bevel-drive V-twin producing around 72 horsepower, paired with a 5-speed gearbox and capable of 137 mph.
By 1981, the model had received several updates including a two piece fairing, Brembo calipers, Silentium mufflers, and side covers to shield the battery. It also officially took on the “Mike Hailwood Replica” name. Today, the MHR remains one of Ducati’s most iconic and collectible machines, representing both a golden era of racing and the enduring legacy of one of motorcycling’s greatest champions.
