Description
The Honda CB1100R was an exotic Honda model that was produced in limited numbers from 1980 to 1983. It was a single-seat sport bike based on the Honda CB900F, initially with a 3⁄4 fairing and exposed lower engine. The R suffix denoted a racing version, however the CB1100R was a road-legal machine produced by Honda and offered for sale to the public. It was produced only in numbers sufficient to meet the homologation requirements for the R to be classed as a production motorcycle in markets into which it was sold. It was Honda’s real first ‘homologation special and was not sold in the US. In 1981 there were a reported 1050 units produced, and 1500 for each of the 1982 and 1983 years. Up for auction is a 1982 Honda CB1100R built by dB Customs of Ontario Canada, who has established himself as a high end builder of performance resto mod motorcycles for customers all around the globe. In true resto mod fashion, the bike has been significantly upgraded and customized with modern technology however paying tribute to the original livery of this classic. Frame and Electronics
The 1982 Honda CB1100RC has a clean title located in Ontario Canada with VIN# SC08-2001757 (original German import). The frame was frame powder coated in RAL-3002 Carmine Red (factory color match). A brand new “to-spec” wiring harness from Japan was sourced with a blade style fuse relocation kit. A new genuine Honda starter solenoid and voltage regulator was installed. The custom stainless steel undertail houses a new LED replica taillight and KOSO LED signals all around. Battery power features a Full Spectrum high performance battery and includes a tender with the sale. The engine is mounted in the frame with a series of bespoke and Pro-bolt titanium fasteners, with custom billet aluminum engine hanger brackets by BITO R&D. The custom TFT digital gauge cluster is from KOSO and includes an AFR readout.
Engine and Ignition
The engine is serial# SC05E-2101797 and numbers matching to the frame. It was vapor blasted (engine cases, cylinder block, cylinder head and covers) and then coated with Cerakote Glacier Black air cure. The engine cases were modified with pumping loss windows and bored to accept larger sleeves. The crankshaft was lightened to 18lbs and the bottom end assembly was balanced. The big bore sleeves were installed in the CB1100R block with 74mm Traum Billet 1187cc pistons with nitro coatings. Morse race spec primary and cam chains were installed along with Vince and Hyde Racing’s A-chain curved cam chain guide and rear AHM style manual cam chain tensioner. The cylinder head received Stage 2 porting, viton seals, Kibble White valve springs, and pulse plasma nitrided stainless valves (G&S Valves – UK), by Ray Mancini of Xtreme Motorsports in Tennessee, and the combustion chambers were sized and balanced to 28cc for a 11.25:1 compression ratio. The CB1100R cams received superfinished cam sprockets and degreed to 105 ex. / 100 int. measured @ 0.050” lift, and held in place with high strength cam hold down fasteners. The transmission components were superfinished and installed with all new roller bearings. New primary shaft dampers were also installed. All new yellow coded genuine Honda rod and crank bearings were installed with all new genuine Honda oil seals and cover gaskets. A new 13 row oil cooler from Sebtrab was installed along with -8AN braided lines and fittings and an oversized oil pickup. The starter clutch was upgraded with a Yamaha R6 conversion, and a slipper gripper clutch was installed by Zanzani and Vince & Hyde Racing. The ignition includes a Dyna 2000 unit with 2.2 ohm coils, Champion plugs, and Dynatek wires. The left engine covers were finished in OEM matched gold color and a new NOS right side stator cover was installed. All side covers are mounted with Pro-Bolt titanium fasteners. New fluids and filter changes were completed after initial break-in.
Induction and Exhaust
The 1187cc engine is fed by a rack of BITO R&D Keihin 37mm FCR carbs with billet velocity stacks (with screens) and throttle block and cables). New OEM Honda intakes were installed with stainless clamps. The bike features a hand bent titanium exhaust system by BITO R&D and includes a Bosch O2 sensor installed for the AFR readout.
Suspension, Brakes, and Controls
The suspension includes OHLINS 43mm conventional front forks and OHLINS KA-149 twin rear shocks with compression and rebound dampening, along with a Nitro Racing billet fork brace and fender mount. The yokes are from SCULPTURE Japan and the “Multiclip” adjustable height clip-on handlebars are from LSL. Left and right switchgear and controls were upgraded with modern units. The 320mm front and 220mm rear brake rotors are from Brembo, including the billet brake calipers, and RCS front brake and clutch masters and levers. The billet aluminum rear sets are from Nitro Racing and finished in black anodizing. All brake and clutch lines are custom from Spiegler. The swingarm is from OVER Racing Japan and rotates around a bespoke titanium pivot axle.
Wheels, Tires, Sprockets and Chain
Gold OZ Racing Gass RS-A wheels (race spec) were installed as a tribute to the original CB1100R gold comstars, in sizes 3.5” x 17” front and 5.5” x 17” rear. The bikes rides on modern AVON Spirit ST tires in sizes 180/55-17 rear and 120/70-17 front. High quality 530 sprockets and drive chain were installed and finished off with a AHM style billet aluminum front sprocket cover.
Bodywork and Paint
The bodywork features bespoke CARBON FIBER bodywork that was sourced from a Japanese Artisan, and features flawless paint that was laid down by Sketchs Ink of Ottawa Ontario Canada. A new CB1100R replacement seat covering was installed along with carbon fiber mirrors (from A-Tech Japan) and a new windscreen with new mounting hardware.
This example is VIN: SC082001757. Per the seller, “The bike was weighed (dry) on race scales with the front being 223.5lbs and the rear 203.5lbs, for a total dry weight of 427ibs. OEM dry weight is 518lbs, for a total weight loss of 91lbs. The weight bias is 52.3 / 47.7 front to rear.”
True mileage unknown. The odometer shows zero miles. “The KOSO gauge is new and is why the odometer shows no mileage.”
It is riding on Avon Sprint ST tires with date codes of 0717 and 0719.
