Depending on how you define “production”, Kawasaki was the first motorcycle manufacturer to roll out a turbocharged motorcycle. But as this OddBike article points out, Kawasaki’s effort was more of a quasi-aftermarket creation, and it wasn’t well-thought out either. Honda’s CX500 Turbo is more deserving of the ‘first production turbo bike’ title, as it truly started the forced induction craze of the early 80s.

Hindsight has shown that turbos were not meant to be, as manufacturers were later able to get big power out motors without that pesky turbo lag. Still, as a piece of history, this is a fascinating motorcycle. Fun trivia: the turbocharger has 51mm rotors that spin over 200,000 rpm!

Thanks to the tiny turbo, the 498cc engine produced 82 horsepower, which got the bike up to 128 miles per hour. This was up from the base CX500’s 50 horsepower. But the turbo wasn’t the end of the modifications – this bike also got upgraded with digital ignition, Pro-link rear suspension, and evolved Comstar wheels.

Manufactured in October 1981, this example is VIN: JH2PC0301CM000384. The seller acquired it 1.5 years ago “from a collector in Palisades New York to add to my collection in Connecticut. He owned a couple of both 500 and 600 Turbos.”

During his ownership, the seller has covered 100 miles. The odometer shows 15,623 miles.

“I am selling some of the bikes in my collection due to downsizing a little in my retirement. Overall the bike is an amazing example and would be a great addition to anyone collection or the person who’s has always wanted a CX500 Turbo, but have yet to find one!”
Maintenance:
“The bike really didn’t need anything when I bought it. I did change all of the fluids when I purchased it. I also had to replace the starter relay solenoid switch as it had an intermittent problem. I used genuine Honda parts. I do all of my own maintenance as I have been riding, racing and wrenching on bike since I was 15 years old.” The seller states that there are no known mechanical issues.
Modifications:
Per the seller, this bike is stock.

It is riding on Shinko SR712 tires with date codes of 0113 and 0713.

The sale includes 2 ignition keys, turbocharger/fuel injection manual, owner’s manual, tire pressure gauge with bag, Cycle Guide magazine, and a brochure.

Cosmetic Blemishes: please see the album in the “Photos” tab for all known cosmetic blemishes. Here is a selection:
“The bike is in amazing cosmetic condition. I did show pictures of the only small marks in the paint that I am aware of. It is one of the cleanest example I have ever seen in person.”
