Yamaha introduced the XJ550 Seca in 1981 as a middleweight sport standard positioned between entry level machines and larger displacement superbikes. Powered by a 528cc air cooled inline four with dual overhead cams and two valves per cylinder, it produced just over 50 horsepower at 10,000 rpm and about 30 lb-ft of torque at 7,500 rpm. Claimed top speed was above 100 mph, making the Seca competitive in its class while still approachable for everyday use.

The engine featured Yamaha’s YICS (Yamaha Induction Control System), which improved combustion efficiency and fuel economy by creating a swirl effect in the intake charge. Fuel was delivered by four 28mm Mikuni carburetors, ignition was transistorized for reliability, and mileage was reported at over 50 mpg. Power was transferred through a six speed gearbox and chain final drive, with the narrow engine design helping to improve cornering clearance.

The XJ550 has a steel tube frame, 35mm front forks and twin preload adjustable rear shocks, with braking handled by a front disc and rear drum (a second front disc was optional). Cast alloy wheels carried a 19 inch front and 18 inch rear, while ergonomics included a flat seat, raised bars, and a small headlight fairing for wind protection. The dash has a speedometer, tachometer, fuel and voltage gauges. The XJ550 Seca has both center and side stands.
