Additional photos of this Yamaha XJ650 Turbo are available here for your perusal.
The Yamaha XJ650 Turbo was one of the quintessential examples of the 1980s Japanese movement to bring turbochargers to motorcycles. Right after Honda brought out the CX Turbo, Yamaha brought out a turbocharged variant of their 650 Seca, and it took 80s styling to a whole new level. The Turbo ended up being more successful on paper than in reality, and it didn’t last very long in the market. On the flip side, it’s become an interesting piece of Yamaha’s history that makes for a great collectible.
This example is VIN: 18G6014124. The seller acquired it four years ago from a private party in Minnesota through Craigslist. “I picked it up at a time when I had a lot more free time and money, I’m letting it go as I don’t have enough garage space or free time to resume messing with this project.” The listing includes a parts bike: “I picked the silver one up in the middle of nowhere Iowa as a deal sweetener on a dirt bike.”
The odometer shows 2,296 miles. The seller has not ridden it, “only started it in my garage a few times.”
The odometer of the parts bike shows 24,709 miles.
Modifications:
The turbocharger has been rebuilt and modified with a TD04 cartridge. Custom work was done by G-Pop Shop.
The bike will also “come with a vintage aeronautical VDO boost gauge, boost valve brand ball, and spring boost controller.”
Cosmetic Blemishes:
The seller notes “small cracks here and there in some of the mounting tabs on the plastics on white bike.”
“The silver bike is a train wreck but has lots of parts on it.”
Mechanically, the seller says that “I would have the fuel pump gone through and the bike needs to be reassembled.” The carbs have been rebuilt.
The sale includes a motorcycle lift.
Currently located in Des Moines, Iowa, both of these Yamahas are offered on Bills of Sale only. Have any Seca Turbo stories or questions about this listing? Let us know in the “Comments” tab!
