Ducati followed the 900SS with the release of its successor — the 900S2 — in 1982. Along with fresh styling, it also brought practical changes in the form of an electric starter and a stronger gearbox. For all of its promise, though, the bike couldn’t match its legendary predecessor when it came to commercial success. Only 1,236 examples were built between 1982 and 1984.

That’s because, even though the S2 boasted the same 864cc bevel drive L-twin, its grunt was hampered by increasingly stringent emissions regulations. Between the oversized airbox and the restrictive exhaust, the 900S2 showed itself to be a much tamer beast on the road. Estimated output came to some 80hp and 63.5lb-ft of torque.

Nevertheless, beneath the new bodywork, the 900S2 boasted the same frame as that used in the Mike Hailwood Replica. In practice, this made for excellent handling, even with the reduced power. As Silodrome put it, “For these reasons I’ve always quite liked the Ducati S2. It’s a bike that had to fight tooth and nail for every sale and despite the lack of funds for R&D it actually had a significantly improved transmission over the 900 SS, and handling that was as good or better than the best of the Bimotas.”

This example is VIN: DM860SS092818, engine #: 097025. It came to Iconic as an import from Japan.

The odometer shows 23,313 kilometers (14,486 miles).
