Description

1/9 Update: Thanks to Bruce in the comments – based on his feedback it is possible that this is a 1982 model that was repainted to look like a 1983 during its restoration. We are trying to find a definitive source to verify the VIN range by year of this model and would appreciate assistance in that regard. Please note that the bike is titled as a 1983 model on the Oregon title.

Please Note: In response to customer requests, we are implementing an automatic bid bump: if your proxy bid meets or exceeds the reserve price, bidding will jump up to meet that price and you will see “Reserve price has been met” under the price. Please contact abhi@iconicmotorbikes.com if you have any questions!

Additional photos of this Honda CB1100R are available here for your perusal.

Considered to be Honda’s first homologation special, the CB1100R is a legend among Honda fans – especially those based in the US, where this bike was never officially sold. The CBR was offered in 1981 (RB), 1982 (RC), and 1983 (RD). As a RD, this bike is one of 1,500 examples. The RD was differentiated by a metallic red paint job with a silver Honda logo on the tank.

Based on the CB900F, the CB1100R was developed to allow Honda to compete in endurance racing – they won the ’81 New Zealand Castrol Six Hour. It was big and it was heavy, but it was damn fast. The engine from the CB900 was bored out, bumping displacement up to 1062cc. The new engine produced 115 horsepower at 9,000 rpm. Top speed was 149 miles per hour, making it the fastest bike of its time.

Despite the 518 pound weight, the new one piece frame combined with Honda’s first use of twin-piston calipers and nitrogen-charged piggyback shocks in a production bike made this bike successful on race tracks that utilized fast sweepers over tight hairpins.

This example is VIN: SC082001317.

The odometer shows 24,161 kilometers (15,012 miles).

This came to us from the collection in South Africa that we’ve recently been selling. We do not have maintenance history on it though it was restored at some point in the past- the gold on the engine cases and the red on the bodywork is slightly off.

In preparation for the listing we rebuilt the carbs, installed a new battery, and flushed the fuel tank. We note that there are some non-original bolts and the petcock may intermittently leak a little if the bike sits for a long time.

Modifications:
We believe it has a Bassani (or replica of a Bassani) exhaust.

Tank protector.

Aftermarket mirrors.

Cosmetic Blemishes:

Inside of the tank:

It is riding on a Pirelli Sport Demon front and Bridgestone Battlax rear from 2009.

The sale includes two keys.
