Though the model debuted in 1985, Suzuki’s legendary Gixxer line did not make its way to the US until 1986. The changes were minor – better headlights, a revised belly pan, and 25mm longer swingarm, but Americans were probably too busy drooling over the first true street-legal race replica sold in this market to notice.

Those aren’t just our words – Suzuki specifically marketed the Gixxer as a “racebike for the street” and backed it up with a design that featured a 749cc inline-four motor fed by 31mm Mikuni carbs and Suzuki’s Twin Swirl Combustion Chamber with 16 valve heads. It put down 80 horsepower at the rear wheel (106 at the crank) through a six-speed transmission, and impressively the engine weighed 30 pounds less than the previous GS750 motor (even though that was air-cooled).

Weight savings were not just limited to the motor. The whole bike weighed just 388 pounds dry, which was a revelation at the time. The GSX-R750 inspired copycats from the other Japanese manufacturers and impressively, it’s still in production today (though it hasn’t seen significant changes since 2011).

Manufactured in January of 1986, this example is VIN: JS1GR75A1G2106268, Engine #: R705-124983. The seller acquired it in March 2017.

During his ownership, the seller covered roughly 4,000 miles. The odometer shows 21,113 miles.

Before I purchased it, the bike had a full restoration. The engine was compression checked and was running great, so it was not torn down. Otherwise pretty much everything that wasn’t perfect was refinished and rebuilt, including:”
• Bodywork professionally repaired (the usual chips, scratches, cracks, broken tabs, etc.) and refinished with PPG products. New decals by RDdecals.com. The decals are over the clear for maintenance and another full set of decals from RDdecals.com is included.
• Wheels powder coated
• New chain and sprockets
• New tires
• All new wheel and swingarm bearings
• Brake rotors refinished with ceramic coating
• Brake calipers and master cylinders refinished and rebuilt
• New EBC brake pads
• New NOS brake and clutch lines.
• Clutch rebuild including new clutch plates, springs, basket, etc.
• New lithium battery.
• Tons of new NOS fasteners and details like bar ends trim pieces, etc.
• New NOS windscreen with rubber trim.

Modifications:
Mirrors are removed and a rearview camera installed to satisfy the California Highway Patrol. This can be removed; it’s mounted with zip ties and adhesive tape. New NOS mirrors included.

Front fender from an ’87 model GSX-R750. The original ’86 fender, which has also been refinished, is included.

Full stainless Yoshimura exhaust system, not Yoshimura R&D here in Corona, CA, but a real Japanese system made at Yoshimura Japan and imported to the US. The original “impossible to find” exhaust is included — it’s in good shape but the heat shield is not perfect. Iconic can source reproduction heat shields.

Period correct headlight cover.

Tail “tidy”. Sale includes original grab bar and license plate lights, both new NOS.

Front forks black powder coated with Ohlins internals, set for 195 lbs. rider. Additional set of unfinished aluminum fork tubes included. Custom Nitron rear shock set for 195 lbs. rider (original rear shock included).

Black powder coated swingarm with chain guard delete. Another freshly refinished, professionally clear anodized stock swingarm with chain guard tabs and new NOS chain guard is included.

Side stand indicator switch removed-new NOS unit included.

K&N pod air filters.

Flush mount turn signals, attached with adhesive, no holes drilled in body. The new NOS turn signals included.

Rear seat cowl.

Battery tender lead.

The seller states, “should the purchaser want a stock example, all the parts are included. A few parts might require vapor blasting (to remove powder coat) and refinish with clear such as foot peg mounts, rear brake lever, etc.”

Cosmetic Blemishes:

Inside of the tank:

It is riding on Avon Roadrider tires with date codes of 0413 and 3213.

The seller states that the valves were adjusted at 17,000 miles. In April of 2020 he had us clean the carbs and adjust the air/fuel mixture.

This month, the seller had us trim the bellypan so it would clear the Yoshimura exhaust.

The sale includes three keys (one pictured). The other two keys are NOS that were cut when the owner just purchased the bike.

Currently located at our facility in Santa Monica, California (please make an appointment for an inspection), this Suzuki is offered on a clean California title with registration current through March 2022.
