Motorcyclist magazine summed it up perfectly: the new-for-1985 Kawasaki Ninja 600R was “the bike that essentially invented the modern 600 middleweight category.”
“A short wheelbase and 16-inch wheels front and rear emphasized the little sportbike’s compact nature and allowed sure-footed handling that riders bred on bigger bikes had previously only dreamed about. Air-assisted AVDS suspension meant it was just as sophisticated as its big brother the 900R.”
To improve on its efforts, Kawasaki took the 600R and released a limited-edition variant known as the 600RX. Only 1,000 were shipped over to the U.S. and along with giving the bike an aluminum alloy frame — saving some 16.5 pounds over the standard model — the Big K also reduced the rake and shortened the wheelbase by 0.5 inches. Taken together, such changes made the already nimble Ninja even lighter and quicker to steer.
