Moto Guzzi first introduced the 1000 SP — also known as the ‘Spada’ — in 1978 as a gentleman’s tourer intended for racking up miles in comfort and at speed. Thanks to its aerodynamic front fairing, the bike offered excellent wind and weather protection. Like many other Guzzis of the era, the Spada featured the Italian firm’s “Integral Braking System.” In practice, this meant that depressing the rear brake pedal would actuate the rear disc as well as one of the front discs; the front brake lever would clamp down on the other front disc.

For all of its promise, though, the original 1000 SP was sorely lacking when it came to fit and finish. Accordingly, Moto Guzzi went back to the drawing board and released a revised version — the 1000 SPII — in 1983.

Like its predecessor, the bike featured a 90-degree v-twin measuring 948cc in displacement. Paired with a five-speed transmission and a final shaft drive, it was good for 75hp, 55.6lb-ft of torque, and a top speed of approximately 120mph.

As Cycle World put it in its period review: “There is a lot more right with the Moto Guzzi. The appearance is dazzling. It looks like a Moto Guzzi and it’s showy, but in a tasteful way. The details lend an air of quality to the machine, with nice castings, painted steel fenders and even steel sidecovers. All that history and tradition and style somehow makes the Moto Guzzi appealing, even if it won’t buy you a cup of coffee. At least the Guzzi price tag is reasonable enough so that you can buy a cup of coffee after you’ve bought the motorcycle. About all that’s missing is a dealer in every town. But that would take away the exclusivity.”

This example is VIN: ZGUVHAVT9HM100025. The seller acquired the bike five and a half years ago, he states “I’m a senior citizen downsizing my collection. I had 11 motorcycles at the same time and rotated them. You will not find a cleaner, better running, SPII SP1000 set up this well!”

The odometer shows 4,218 miles.

Maintenance:
The seller reports that he swapped the stock distributor for a electronic ignition module, installed stainless steel brake lines, and replaced the brake pads.

Modifications:
Progressive fork springs set, fork seals and wipers.

Spiegler braided stainless steel brake lines front and rear.

Bar-end mirrors.

Battery tender lead.

Not pictured: Sachse digital ignition.

Inside of the tank:

It is riding on Pirelli Sport Demon tires from 2017. The seller states that the tires have covered approximately 226 miles.

The sale includes three keys and four luggage keys.

The sale also includes the original tool kit, some period Moto Guzzi literature, workshop manuals, spare gaskets, the original distributor, as well as a new Gustifan windscreen.
