Though the model debuted in 1985, Suzuki’s legendary Gixxer line did not make its way to the US until 1986. The changes were minor – better headlights, a revised belly pan, and 25mm longer swingarm, but Americans were probably too busy drooling over the first true street-legal race replica sold in this market to notice.

Those aren’t just our words – Suzuki specifically marketed the Gixxer as a “racebike for the street” and backed it up with a design that featured a 749cc inline-four motor fed by 31mm Mikuni carbs and Suzuki’s Twin Swirl Combustion Chamber with 16 valve heads. It put down 80 horsepower at the rear wheel (106 at the crank) through a six-speed transmission, and impressively the engine weighed 30 pounds less than the previous GS750 motor (even though that was air-cooled).

Weight savings were not just limited to the motor. The whole bike weighed just 388 pounds dry, which was a revelation at the time. The GSX-R750 inspired copycats from the other Japanese manufacturers and impressively, it’s still in production today.

The seller of this example (VIN: JS1GR75A6H2100936) acquired it from a private party in California two years ago.

Since then he’s covered approximately 200 miles. The odometer now shows 10,919 miles.

He has multiple GSX-R750s and is letting this go to fund a custom 1986 model which will either be done up as a Skoal Bandit or Vance & Hines replica.

Modifications:

The previous owner stated that this has the tail section and solo seat from a ’86 Limited Edition, the fairings and flat top tank from a ’85 model, and it was repainted.

Cosmetically, the seller states the this GSX-R “is in overall excellent shape. I have provided pictures of the only spots on the bike – one on the left side of the tank (the picture of the mark makes it look much worse than it actually looks in person) and a surface scratch on the tail which would come out with proper buffing.”

He adds that there are no known mechanical issues. “All maintenance receipts are available. New tires and carbs have been cleaned and synced. Cracked rubber lines were replaced and the clutch/brake fluid has been flushed. This bike is ready to ride!

Currently located in Waxhaw, North Carolina, this Suzuki is offered on a clean North Carolina title.
