To homologate the FZR for AMA Superbike racing, Yamaha was obligated to produced 200 examples of their 750cc sportbike in 1987 – so that’s all they built. At the time, the FZR750 sold for $4,599. But the homologation RT version, as shown here, would set you back $8,999. The hefty price and the exclusivity weren’t the only things that limited the market on this bike – Yamaha would only sell you one if you had a AMA or WERA license!
Eddie Lawson won the 1986 Daytona 200 on a Yamaha FZ750, which had a steel frame. For the RT, Yamaha stepped things up with an upgraded 5-valve, Genesis head 749cc FZ750 motor stuffed into the aluminum Deltabox frame that debuted on the FZR1000. The big brother FZR1000 had a 5-speed transmission, but Yamaha blessed the RT with six cogs in the gearbox as well as adjustable suspension (preload and rebound, both front and rear).
Manufactured in January 1987, this example is VIN: JYA2NK002HA000170. The seller acquired it in June 2021 here on Iconic Motorbikes. The previous owner acquired it roughly 15 years ago from a private party in Hollywood, California.
The current owner has not ridden it at all, and is letting it go as he is paring his collection down to focus on dirt bikes. The odometer shows 14,176 miles.
Modifications:
Vance & Hines full exhaust.
Separate switch for the radiator fan.
Cosmetic Blemishes: there are several scratches in the bodywork, all of which are shown in the photo album up top. Here’s a selection of the most significant:

One of the tabs on the seat cowl is broken.
The previous owner flushed the brake fluid, coolant, and oil before the sale to the current owner. He notes that it will need fork seals to be roadworthy. In addition, the bike has been sitting since the new owner acquired it and may need some carb work as it is not currently starting. It is riding on Shinko Podium tires with date codes of 3620 and 0921.
The sale includes the seat cowl, original tool kit, owner’s manual, some advertisements, parts catalogue, service guide, aftermarket fork seals, aftermarket oil filters, Goodridge brake lines, levers, and a spare master cylinder.
Currently located at our facility in Santa Monica, California (please make an appointment for an inspection), this Yamaha is offered on a clean California title on non-op registration.
