Coming to market in 1988, the R100GS was BMW’s newest iteration of adventure-touring motorcycling, building off of the success of both the R80G/S and R80GS models. With the goal of making a motorcycle that was equally capable on-and-off-road, the R100GS featured a 980cc air-cooled, twin cylinder boxer, which was good for roughly 60 horsepower and 55 ft./lb. of torque.
With a low center of gravity mainly due to the placement of the engine, the GS was surprisingly capable on difficult terrain. To further enhance the off-road potential of R100GS, BMW released the motorcycle with a dirt-oriented wheel setup of a 21-inch front wheel and a 17-inch rear wheel. Rounding out the long-distance package was a new larger tank, meant to extend the adventure even further.
