Released in 1986 and named after racer Renzo Pasolini, the Ducati Paso was a bike created from odd beginnings. Built when Ducati was owned by Cagiva, this bike was designed to compete with the up-and-coming Japanese superbikes of the time.
It was designed by the famous Massimo Tamburini and is notable for the extensive bodywork which hides the traditional (but modified) trellis frame and a 748cc Pantah L-twin which produces 72 horsepower.
Sales of the base model were limited in themselves – a 1986 issue of Motorcyclist magazine states that just 700 were “slated for the US market in 1987.” But Ducati released a true Limited Edition exclusively for the US, and most sources state that just 50 were created.
As is often the case with older Italians, the records can be a bit tough to fully confirm – in this thread on DucatiPaso.org, two different people claim to have written into Ducati asking about production numbers for the Limited – one was told by Livio Lodi (curator of the Ducati museum) that 50 were built for the US, one was told (by someone else in Ducati customer service) that 50 were built for California and 50 were built for the other 49 states. No matter what, it’s rare!
Confusion also exists about what exactly is different about the Limited. Obvious changes include the pearl white bodywork and red Oscam wheels. Some sources suggest that there were also mechanical upgrades with larger valves and headers, ported heads, and more.
This example is VIN: ZDM1DA3N6JB754066. The seller is Iconic’s very own Head of Transportation, Cory! He acquired the bike approximately two years ago. Since that time, he’s ridden this Paso sparingly, so he’s decided it’s time to find it a new home.
The odometer shows 12,539 miles.
Maintenance:
Upon acquiring the bike, Cory took it to 2 Wheel Dyno Works, Inc where he had the oil and oil filter replaced, the fuel filter replaced, the belts replaced, the brakes bled, the spark plugs replaced, and the tires replaced. At the time, he also had the carbs rebuilt.
