Honda introduced the Hawk GT in 1988 as a different kind of sportbike. One that blended modern engineering with classic sensibility. Built around a 647cc 52 degree V twin with three valve heads and liquid cooling. The Hawk used an updated evolution of the VT500 engine, tuned for usable torque and smooth response, wrapped in a lightweight aluminum twin spar frame that served as a reminder that performance didn’t have to mean excess.

Despite modest peak power figures, the Hawk GT impressed with its balance and handling. Cycle World described it as having “just as much agility as most modern sportbikes, and even more agile than some”, crediting its quick geometry, low center of gravity, and 17 inch wheels at both ends. The single sided Pro-Arm swingarm borrowed from Honda’s RC30 was both functional and beautiful, paired with Pro-Link suspension and twin disc brakes. At just over 400 pounds wet, it was one of the most flickable and confidence inspiring bikes of its era.

Though its $4,000 price tag and unconventional design made it a niche choice at launch, the Hawk GT has since earned cult status for precisely the qualities that limited its initial appeal. Its simplicity, engineering honesty, and timeless chassis design made it a true rider’s motorcycle. one that favored engagement and mechanical purity over outright speed. Decades later, the Hawk GT stands as one of Honda’s most distinctive experiments: a middleweight twin that bridged past and future.

This example is VIN: JH2RC3101JM000153. The seller states: “My wife and groomsmen gave this to me at our rehearsal dinner as a wedding gift because I rode nearly the exact same bike in college. I’ve kept it garaged and well cared-for, but I simply don’t ride enough to warrant owning it. I’d rather have a proper buyer have this bike, take care of it, and ride it as intended.”

The odometer shows 11,905 miles.
