One of the best beginner dual sports ever, the Honda NX125 was only imported to the US for a few years. This was the baby of the NX line.
The Honda NX125 was the smallest of the NXs, which were only imported for a few years. The combination of XR-roots with a slightly more street friendly composition made it an excellent all-rounder.
Offered in the states in 125, 250, and 650cc versions, the NX650 was by far the most popular in the US. According to Autoevolution “In the performance department, the 1988 Honda NX 125 Transcity had its soul brought to life by a 124cc four-stroke single-cylinder air-cooled engine fed by a 24 mm carburetor, delivering 13 hp with a peak force at 9,000 rpm and 12 Nm (9 lb-ft) torque at 7,500 rpm.”
This example is VIN: JH2JD0916JK000246. The seller states “I bought this NX125 to use for our annual group ride through Death Valley during April, 2025. Our ride leader did it on a 125cc in 2023 & I wanted to also. Riding a 125cc through Death Valley while climbing 6,000 foot peaks with 200+ pounds of rider & gear on was very successful but now that I’ve done that, I don’t need this bike any more.”
The odometer shows 6,485 miles. The seller has covered approximately 900 miles during his several years of ownership.
Maintenance:
The seller states “The bike runs great. All 4 turn signals work as does low/high beam, horn & front/rear brake activated brake light & taillight. I bought this bike for one purpose to conquer Death Valley the long way on a 125cc. It’s a great specimen for being a 1988 model. During the Death Valley ride I didn’t have one issue during all of 600 miles. No oil leaks, no issues with tires, etc. Since that ride the bike has been parked. It needs the following: oil change, air filter, new tires. There are 2 areas I want the next owner to be aware of: 1) the choke cable on the dashboard does not work. The choke cable is not connected to the carburetor. I see the cable under the gas tank but it is not connected to anything. To start the bike I simply use the left hand index finger to hold the choke lever up for a few seconds until the engine starts. 2) The starter button works all the time on the right handlebar but does not have the extruded box that is connected to the actual button (see image). This means I have to use my left hand pinky without the glove to push the starter button the get the engine started. Once pushed, the starter starts every time, all the time. This does create a challenge when the engine is cold & you use the left hand to hold the choke up for a few seconds. So, an extruded item needs to be glued to the starter button. Once again, I had no issue on all 600 miles through Death Valley. The bike handled & performed well.”
Modifications:
The seller states “It’s a 37 year old, low mileage stock bike. This NX125 was part of the security fleet of famous Ascot Raceway in Gardena, CA and was geared down since it was just used on raceway premises. For higher top speed the front sprocket should be changed.”
It is riding on Bridgestone Trail Wing 42 tires with date codes of 0701 and 0701.
