First unveiled at the 1986 Cologne Motorcycle Show, the Yamaha FZR1000 was a watershed model that marked the dawn of the tuning fork company’s first foray into big-bore four-stroke superbikes. The predecessor to potent two-stroke models like the parallel-twin RD350 and V4 RD500, the “Fizzer” as it was affectionately known, entered production in 1987 as an advanced water-cooled, 989cc, four-stroke inline-four with DOHC, a five-speed transmission, and the same 20-valve (5-per) setup first seen on the FZ750 in ’85.
At the end of the 80s, Cycle World named it the “Bike of the Decade”, thanks in part to a 0-60 time of 2.9 seconds and a top speed of nearly 170 mph! This was the top speed champion of the motorcycle world until the Hayabusa was introduced. The bike won the Castrol Six Hour in 1987 and 1988, and the same five-valve engine architecture would become the basis of Yamaha’s V8 Formula One car for the 1989 series. Along with a stout engine and a futuristic frame, the new FZR also wore lightweight 17″ wheels front and rear and very modern looking bodywork.
Manufactured in January of 1987, this example is VIN: JYA2LK002HA000191, Engine #: 2LK000191. It was originally sold out of AB’s Motorcycle Shop in Ontario, Canada. It is unknown when it crossed into the United States. The seller acquired it from a collector in North Carolina in September of 2021.
The odometer shows 29,303 kilometers (18,208 miles).
Maintenance:
The seller performed an oil change and reinforced all bodywork mounts, replacing them with new stainless hardware and rubber grommets in preparation for the sale. He notes that “the previous owner replaced tires (a few hundred miles ago), brake work, and all fluids.”
Modifications:
Wolf headers and exhaust.
