The baby version of Yamaha’s TDR250, the TDR50 was produced for just one year only: 1988. Like its bigger sibling, the bike was far ahead of its time from a design standpoint; take a look at the current crop of sports tourers, and you’ll find echoes of the TDR’s upright riding position and comfortable trail geometry.
For the powerplant, Yamaha utilized a liquid-cooled 50cc two-stroke single. Though it made just 7.2hp and 4.2 lb-ft of torque, the little TDR came specced with some impressive equipment, including 140mm of travel at the front, 130mm of travel at the rear, disc brakes, and 12″ cast wheels. Best of all, the whole packaged tipped the scales at a scant 176lbs.
Yamaha has an example in their internal museum collection in Communication Plaza, “a space that presents the past, present, and future of the Yamaha Motor group.” On that site, Yamaha themselves compares riding the TDR50 to “swimming through the town.”
This example is VIN: 3FY003201.
The odometer shows 676 kilometers (420 miles).
It was originally sold in Japan. It is one of several 50cc bikes that we acquired from Japan to offer our clients.
