1989 Kawasaki ZXR750

The Kawasaki ZXR750 was first introduced in 1989 as the company’s new contender for the emerging World Superbike series. Built around an aluminum beam frame, it featured distinctive styling influenced by endurance racing machines, including twin ram-air ducts routed into the fuel tank. The model was powered by a development of Kawasaki’s inline-four engine, fitted with redesigned cylinder heads, larger valves, and 36mm Keihin carburetors to improve breathing. Output exceeded 100 horsepower, making the ZXR750 a competitive road-based platform for homologation.

Chassis components included 43mm front forks, powerful braking hardware, and equipment that reflected its racing ambitions, such as remote master cylinders, adjustable levers, and Kawasaki’s “positive neutral finder.” A reverse torque limiter (an early form of slipper clutch) was also fitted, allowing smoother downshifts during aggressive riding. While the rear suspension design of the first-generation H-models was widely criticized for being overly stiff and underdamped, the ZXR nevertheless offered confident front-end stability and strong braking performance for its era.

As Classic Motorbikes puts it in its review: “In keeping with Kawasaki’s wild and raucous two-stroke machines, the ZXR750 is a thoroughly raw and untamed beast. The engine develops its 100 plus horses in way that never fails to excite while the chassis barely keeps it all in check, adding up to a breath taking journey every inch of the way. It is hard, if not impossible, to ride the ZXR in a manner less than the pure lunatic.”
