Suzuki’s GSX-R line is one of the greatest sport bike dynasties ever produced – one of the less known Gixxers was the 250. It launched in 1987 as the GJ72 generation and was produced for the Japanese domestic market only.

Two years later, Suzuki made some dramatic upgrades and created the GJ73A – including the addition of an extra R at the end of the model name as it became the GSX-R250R. That was Suzuki’s way of letting you know this was the racier model compared to the original GSX-R250 (which was still available at dealerships).

The new model received a thoroughly revised, sportier chassis featuring a twin tube aluminum frame, a stronger fork, and a reinforced swingarm carrying a larger 18” rear wheel. A wider front wheel was paired with larger brake rotors and calipers, while fueling came from four individual Mikuni “Slingshot” downdraft carburetors. The bodywork was completely redesigned from nose to tail, complemented by lower handlebars and a lower, narrower seat that gave the bike a far more purposeful stance. Offered only in Japan from 1989 to 1990, the GJ73A is a rare sight in the US today.

This example is VIN: GJ73A106402. The seller acquired it from a private party in Kansas City, Missouri six months ago.

During his ownership, the seller covered 2 miles. The odometer shows 6,817 kilometers (4,235 miles).

“This bike came to me as a very original, complete, unmolested survivor. The prior owner imported it from Japan in 2024 and decided to sell off some of his collection last year. I was fortunate enough to buy this along with a few others. There is no known history prior to 2024. While the bike needed some TLC, I was very impressed with its originality. All original paint, body, mirrors, exhaust, and hardware. Every fairing screw was correct and in the right location. Not often I see that. There was evidence of prior maintenance (carburetor work, plugs), but it appeared professional. The bike shows no indication of prior collision damage.

Despite 37 years of life, the paint and body were in very good condition. Perhaps a testament to Suzuki quality. My objective was to preserve the originality as much as possible while still achieving it a collector-quality presentation.

Unfortunately, the original windscreen was clouded beyond restoration. Since it’s unique to this model, I sourced a quality aftermarket one from Japan. It was installed with the correct, genuine Suzuki hardware and edge trim for that factory look. I have the original screen if the new owner desires it.

The original red rear seat cover had some stains and a small hole, so a new cover and strap was made by a local upholsterer.

While riding, the engine demonstrated a mid-rpm stumble typically associated with a rich fuel mixture. After confirming the setting were stock, I proceeded to do a full ultrasonic clean and comprehensive rebuild with all new gaskets and seals. Bike now starts and runs as it should.

This bike was only produced for the Japanese Market for 1989-90, so it is very rare to see here in the US, especially in this bold livery. The colors are “Space Black” and “Marble Italian Red”. So interesting to see iconic GSX-R heritage with unique features like these headlights and mirrors.

Notice the aluminum alloy frame, braced swingarm, and large brakes to harness the liquid-cooled, 17,000 rpm four-cylinder screamer.

I’m tempted to keep this one for myself but I’ve already got too many.”
