Description

6/16 Update: As pointed out in the comments, OEM RK odometers stop at 180kph. Thus, it appears that this bike has had its odometer swapped at some point in its life — we’ve updated the mileage accordingly, and we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience!

In the long line of Gixxers, the ’89 “RK” model is considered by some to be the most special of them all.

The RK was also known as the RR – no matter what you called it, it was rare. Just 500 were built for homologation purposes, none of which were officially sold in the US.

Suzuki lengthened the stroke of the motor to make it easier for race teams to tune, and there were extra goodies like a magnesium cylinder head cover, Mikuni BST-40 carb, close-ratio gearbox, stronger clutch with an additional plate, aluminum fuel tank, quick disconnect fiberglass bodywork, wider wheels, lower handlebars, repositioned footpegs, thinner seat, 43mm front fork with rebound and compression adjustment, and 310mm front disc brakes.

Rounding off the package was, in Suzuki’s words, a “chain with special gold-colored outer plates, creating an impressive gold line.”

This example is VIN: GR79C100022. This example came to us from a collection in Japan.

The odometer shows 14,649 kilometers (9,102 miles). However, the factory odometer has been swapped out, so true mileage is unknown.

Maintenance:
In preparation for the listing, the seller had us replace the oil, the oil filter, the spark plugs, the brake fluid, and the parking light. We also cleaned and synced the carbs, washed the front caliper, serviced the chain, and stripped and painted the rear brake reservoir cap. Finally, we installed new Pirelli Diablo Rosso II tires with date codes of 3121 and 3722.

Olly did the work, he notes the following in his condition report:

Tire Years – Front/ Rear: New
Tire Life – Front/ Rear: 100%
Tire Pressure – Front: 36PSI; Rear:
38PSI
Brake Life – Front: 40%; Rear: 60%
