At a time when Japanese manufacturers were getting increasingly aggressive and race-oriented with their 400s to compete in their domestic Formula 3 championship, Yamaha introduced the FZR400 in 1986 as a bike to be enjoyed “on twisty public roads where the customers would actually be riding and enjoying them.” For more on the FZR400, check out this excellent profile on Yamaha’s site where they talk about the challenges of it being the first motorcycle to use “full-fledged radial tires” and how they fought the urge to implement quick steering like their competition to create something that consumers would enjoy more on the street.

But Yamaha did not stop there – in 1989 they debuted an up-spec model called the FZR400RR, but they did not offer it in America. Claimed hp was 60 out of the 399cc horsepower, enough for a top speed of 122 miles per hour.

The RR also boasted a cosmetic upgrade which made it look like a baby OW-01 with the flush-mount headlights.

When the bike was originally imported into British Columbia, it was assigned VIN: 2BG507044GW083788. The seller purchased it in June 2022. He is selling to reduce his collection.

The odometer shows 10,689 kilometers (6,643 miles).

Maintenance:
The seller states, “The motor was rebuilt by 2 Wheel Dyno Works in Kirkland, Washington. Since then, it’s been ridden approximately 200 miles. Invoice for rebuild available. Front brake master cylinder was also rebuilt at same time. A front fender is included to replace the broken one, it will need paint to match.”
