When it was introduced in 1989, the FZR600 was a quantum leap forward that was so good that Yamaha basically left it untouched until 1993. The Japanese company was focused on making a great base for production racing, and they were quickly proven correct – in its first year, 9 out of the top 10 finishers at Daytona were on Yamahas and first place went to none other than John Kocinski.
Although the twin-spar frame was made from steel instead of the FZR400’s aluminum setup, the larger 599cc inline 4-cylinder engine bore a striking resemblance to it’s smaller counterpart, while putting out a heftier 90 horsepower.
Several models of the FZR600 came with Yamaha’s EXUP valve system, which helped maintain back pressure when the engine was turning at low speeds – it led to better mid-range power though top-end power was reduced to 76 horsepower.
