Coming to market in 1988, the R100GS was BMW’s newest iteration of adventure-touring motorcycling, building off of the success of both the R80G/S and R80GS models. With the goal of making a motorcycle that was equally capable on-and-off-road, the R100GS featured a 980cc air-cooled, twin cylinder boxer, which was good for roughly 60 horsepower and 55 ft./lb. of torque.

With a low center of gravity mainly due to the placement of the engine, the GS was surprisingly capable on difficult terrain. To further enhance the off-road potential of R100GS, BMW released the motorcycle with a dirt-oriented wheel setup of a 21-inch front wheel and a 17-inch rear wheel. Rounding out the long-distance package was a new larger tank, meant to extend the adventure even further.

This PD or Paris Dakar version featured an even larger gas tank, hard bags and front impact bars. To get more information about the R100GS Paris-Dakar, check out Motorcycle Classics.

This example is VIN: WB1047903L6134270. The seller acquired the bike approximately five years ago. He states that it was “originally a Hawaii bike, but it was being sold in California. I bought it and had it shipped back east for recommissioning.”

The odometer shows 58,188 miles.

Maintenance:
The seller states that he had “the heads rebuilt by Randy Long with new Siebenrock cylinders and pistons” and that he had “the tank touched up and one of the decals replaced. The bike has covered less than 500 miles since the rebuild.” He adds that the bike “has a new battery” and that “it has been stored inside in a climate-controlled environment.”

Modifications:
Not pictured: Siebenrock cylinders and pistons.

Inside of the tank:

It is riding on Metzeler Tourance tires that have aged out.
