A year after Suzuki changed the sportbike game with the GSX-R750 in 1985, they rolled out the big brother GSX-R1100. The press and the public ate it up, but that didn’t stop Suzuki from making changes every single year. 1991 brought mechanical upgrades in the form of larger carbs, but the most obvious changes were a series of significant cosmetic changes – the bodywork was restyled and the headlights were covered.
Basic specifications of the ’90 model were 145 horsepower and 485 pounds – heavy nowadays but a featherweight when it was released. A Modern Classic review on Bennetts describes the 1100 Gixxer by saying, “on the open road it was astonishing. Fast and torquey like nothing else I’d ridden, but nimble too, feeling like what I imagined a proper race bike would as it flicked from left to right on the smallest of rider inputs.”
