Nowadays, an small-displacement inline-four sportbike is a bit of a unicorn, as evidenced by the popularity and excitement around Kawi’s latest ZX-4RR. Comparatively, the early 90’s were the wild west for bikes of this nature; Japanese manufacturers were constantly coming up with ways to one-up each other in the lightweight motorcycle market, offering features normally reserved for the biggest and best each company had to offer – adjustable suspension, dual rotors, and even advanced electronics.

Yamaha was no stranger to this, offering a ‘beginner-friendly’ motorcycle with the original FZR250R. The 250R was a beginner only in name, as the high-revving and agile bike soon became a staple amongst avid sportbike fans. The 250R was often seen as one of the more sought-after inline-fours of it’s time, offering a claimed 45bhp at a screaming 16,000 rpm while coming in at just 310 pounds – numbers that a motorcycle rider could only dream about in today’s market.

A pioneer in innovation, the FZR came packed with class-leading characteristics for it’s time – a rigid and responsive Deltabox chassis and an EXUP valve tucked away in the exhaust to name a few. With these types of amenities offered on a psuedo “entry-level” motorcycle, it was no wonder the FZR250R was – and still is – a cult classic.
