Description

Click here for an VINData Motorcycle History Report on this 1990 Yamaha FZR400. Additional photos are available here for your perusal.

At a time when Japanese manufacturers were getting increasingly aggressive and race-oriented with their 400s to compete in their domestic Formula 3 championship, Yamaha introduced the FZR400 in 1986 as a bike to be enjoyed “on twisty public roads where the customers would actually be riding and enjoying them.” The US got it in 1988, and many riders preferred it over the bigger brother FZR600.

For more on the FZR400, check out this excellent profile on Yamaha’s site where they talk about the challenges of it being the first motorcycle to use “full-fledged radial tires” and how they fought the urge to implement quick steering like their competition to create something that consumers would enjoy more on the street.

And it paid off in practice. As MCN put in their review: “the rev-happy Yamaha FZR400 attracted the hooligans by the bucket load, drawn to the high-revving engine, sharp handling and high corner speed.”

New for 1990, Yamaha upgraded the FZR400 with a stronger Deltabox aluminum swingarm, and 4-piston front brake calipers. Offered only in California, this less common EXUP version also features a factory solo-seat and EXUP exhaust system providing a noticeable boost to low and mid-range torque, making this example a bit of a stand-out from the usual FZR400 crowd.

Manufactured in July of 1989, this example is VIN: JYA3FHC08LA003275. The seller states that he is the second owner and that he purchased this from the original owner 3 years ago.

During his ownership, the seller has covered 150 miles. The odometer shows 30,433 miles.

Maintenance:
As a motorcycle tech, formerly with Dynojet, the current owner performed the following services in preparation for the sale:

Carburetors were ultrasonically cleaned, rebuilt, and synchronized.

New rubber carburetor to air-box joints installed.

New valve cover gasket installed

He has also provided the following receipts. Please see the full album for further documentation.

The seller states that there are no known mechanical issues.

Modifications:
The seller states that this “motorcycle is all original with the exception of a steel braided rear brake line.”

Inside of the tank:

It is riding on Shinko Podium tires with date codes of 0120 and 0520.

The sale includes two keys and the factory tool kit.

The sale does not include the pictured stand.

Cosmetic Blemishes:
Minor cracking around a left-side upper fairing to lower fairing mount-point. A repair has been made with fiberglass reinforcement to the back-side of the fairing mount. (See photos). A few minor scratches on some body work decals, as well as to the underside of the lower fairing.”
