Ever since its introduction in the early 70s, Yamaha’s parallel-twin TZ racers were a popular choice for privateer racers. The 80s were full of significant updates for the model, including reed valve induction in 1985 and the Deltabox aluminum frame a year later.
The 1990 model has slightly smaller crankcase and a stronger water pump but ultimately became the final year of the parallel twin engine. Yamaha had been successful with its YZR250 in GP racing and the following year saw a complete revamp of the platform, merging proven racing designs of the YZR with practicality of the TZ.
