A year after Suzuki changed the sportbike game with the GSX-R750 in 1985, they rolled out the big brother GSX-R1100. The press and the public ate it up, but that didn’t stop Suzuki from making changes every single year. 1991 brought mechanical upgrades in the form of larger carbs, but the most obvious changes were a series of significant cosmetic changes – the bodywork was restyled and the headlights were covered.
Basic specifications of the ’91 model were 145 horsepower and 497 pounds – heavy nowadays but a featherweight when it was released. A Modern Classic review on Bennetts describes the 1100 Gixxer by saying, “on the open road it was astonishing. Fast and torquey like nothing else I’d ridden, but nimble too, feeling like what I imagined a proper race bike would as it flicked from left to right on the smallest of rider inputs.”
Manufactured in September of 1990, this example is VIN: JS1GV73AXM2100205, Engine #: V710111433. The seller acquired it six years ago on eBay.
During his ownership, the seller has covered 5 miles. The odometer shows 16,799 miles.
The seller is a GSX-R collector who specializes in slabsides. He picked this up to see if he’d enjoy it as much but he prefers slabsides and wants to find this a new home.
Maintenance:
In preparation for the listing, the seller had us perform a $2,500 service to replace the battery, clean and line the tank, install a new petcock, clean and sync the carbs, and flush, bleed, and fill the brakes with new fluid. He also had a spare key set made. Alex and Steve did the work, they note in their condition report that the front and rear tires are at 45% and 35%, respectively, and that the brakes are at 95% each. The hydraulic fluid, clutch, and oil are all OK. Moreover, the headlight, turn signals, brake lights, tail light, plate light, kill switch, and horn are all OK. They advise replacing the steering head bearings along with the tires and recommend fine tuning of the DynoJet carb kit depending on your elevation.
Modifications:
The seller states that the bike is “all stock and unmolested except for tires” and the following two modifications:
Fully adjustable DynoJet carb kit.
Tinted windscreen.
Cosmetic Blemishes: please see the album up top for all known cosmetic blemishes. Here is a selection:
They are generally not noticeable, but at certain angles you can see some remnants of old text on the sidecovers.
Inside of the tank:
It is riding on Dunlop Sportmax tires with date codes of 4102 and 4004.
The sale includes two keys.
